The story of Spiezia

Dr. Marciano Spiezia

Dr Mariano Spiezia graduated in Medicine and Surgery in Italy in the early 1980s, and has since worked on combining orthodox medicine with the extraordinary power of nature. In creating the Spiezia Organics range, using whole plants and added to their extracts, essential oils and carrier oils. The entire range are made without adding water, which gives a high concentration and richness, the benefits of which go a long way. All of the products in the Spiezia range are made by hand and provide an all-natural way to balance, moisturise and revitalise the skin.

Handmade in recycled glass

Spiezia care about looking after the world we live in as much as they care about looking after the body you live in, so every choice they make has the environment in mind – from the labels on the recycled glass bottles and jars to the product miles on the ingredients, every pot, jar and bottle of Spiezia Organic products is handmade in the workshop at Gear Farm, an Organic farm in Cornwall UK.

Flower and Herb Extracts

Spiezia have developed a unique process which uses solar and lunar energy to make the most of the air-dried herbs and flowers used in the products. Each product has, at its heart, a targeted ‘maceration’ which gives it its unique properties, using the essence of the plant to benefit your skin in just the right way.

To create a maceration a measured quantity of herbs and flowers are mix with a measured quantity of extra virgin olive oil and allow to stand in a glass jar in their maceration room for four weeks. Over this time, the heat from the sun and the cooler nights draw the essence from the plant and infuse the oil. The mixture is then pressed and filtered, removing all the solid particles and used as the base of Spiezia's formulations.

Cold Pressing

Cold pressing refers to oils obtained through pressing and grinding fruit or seeds with the use of heavy granite millstones or modern stainless steel presses. Whilst heat is generated through friction in the process, to be classed as cold pressed, the temperature must not rise above 50°C for it to be truly classified as Cold Pressed.

Steam Distillation

Due to the temperature sensitivity of essential oils, it is vital to use a steam distillation process. The process involves taking the part of the plant who's essence you wan't to extract (e.g. Lavender flower, lemon peel, rosemary leaf). Introducing water or steam to the process lowers the boiling point of the oils that you require. The oil is then condensed or extracted from the remaining water, leaving you with the purest, highest quality essential oil and above all, the only by-product is water.
